About Badgerdog
Mission Statement
Our mission is, through teaching and publishing, to amplify the voices of the disenfranchised, the marginalized, the international, and traditional writers of all ages whose literary work should have a larger audience, whose work may not have come to the attention of, or may have been ignored by, market-driven publishing houses, and whose artistic vision can expand the vista for readers in the Americas and the world.
By taking writers effectively from cradle to career, through our educational programs, through internships, graduate assistantships, and on to potential publication in our professional journals, we contribute to the ongoing development of a writer's career and build relationships that last a lifetime.
Why "Badgerdog"?
The name comes from the German word "dachshund" which translates literally to "badger dog." Dachshunds were bred to hunt badgers. Like dachshunds, Badgerdog Literary Publishing is small, independent, and courageous.
Independence is important; for dachshunds it meant that they had to be able to make decisions down in the badger hole without commands from their master.
For Badgerdog Literary Publishing, it means each publication has an independent editorial team adhering to the literary vision and mission of that publication, without commands from a corporate hierarchy. This type of publishing requires courage and tenacity, characteristics defining both dachshunds and Badgerdog Literary Publishing.
Vision
Our vision is to identify, acquire, and revive reputable, defunct literary journals in an effort to strengthen the infrastructure of the American literary tradition, fostering the growth of every next generation of writers.
The first step in this vision is to revive American Short Fiction and restore it to its place as one of the leading publications presenting important new work from emerging and established writers.
Through our educational programs we are fostering the next generation of creative writers. We bring the best writers into Austin area schools in order to cultivate the best student writing. By doing this, we aim to create a solid and reputable program for empowering students to make literary art from their joy and their jeopardy even as they gain language skills that will ensure their future professional success.
