Education Programs Workshop InstructorsBadgerdog Literary Publishing runs both in-school and after-school creative writing workshops in elementary, middle, and high schools (Youth Voices in Ink) during the school year. In addition, Badgerdog runs creative writing summer camps in June and July and workshops for senior citizens (Silver Voices in Ink) throughout Central Texas. Youth Voices in Ink workshop instructors work with students in grades 3–12. School year workshops run for 8–25 weeks, and classes meet once or twice per week. Summer camp workshops meet every day (M–F) for 3 weeks for 3 hours each day. These positions provide excellent opportunities to learn the teaching and publishing processes and to develop skills and experience as teachers and editors of student writing. Qualifications Badgerdog is committed to hiring practicing writers who wish to share their craft and passion with the next generation of poets, playwrights, and nonfiction and fiction writers. Prior teaching experience is appreciated but not required.
Preferred Qualifications MA/MFA in creative writing with a strong background in curriculum design and a demonstrated publishing record (creative or academic). Previous experience working as a writer-in-the-schools is also preferred.
All workshop instructors are required to attend an in-service orientation training where they will be introduced to the Badgerdog Instructor Handbook, a living document that outlines Badgerdog's policies and pedagogy. Workshop Instructor Responsibilities - Attending Badgerdog orientation training and benchmark meeting(s).
- Leading a workshop, guiding students through the writing process toward the goal of publication.
- Providing written response to student work in a regular and timely fashion.
- Serving as section editor for their workshop's contribution to the Youth Voices in Ink anthology.
- Submitting a section introduction for inclusion in the Youth Voices in Ink anthology.
- Contributing 2 original lessons used during your Badgerdog placement
- Submit a 1–2 page typed reflection documenting your placement at Badgerdog, in addition to a completed teaching log.
- Planning a school-site reading for the authors in your workshop.
- Attending the community-wide reading and book release party.
- Complete all additional duties as delineated in the Badgerdog Workshop Instructor Handbook.
Graduate students currently enrolled at the UT Michener Center for Writers may receive course credit by teaching with Badgerdog as an intern. Publication of your writing, in any publication, is a plus; please list your publications, if any. The Education Programs team will review the application materials and select the best candidates for interviews. Site Managers (Summer Camp)Badgerdog staffs each of its summer camp locations with a site manager to oversee the day-to-day logistics of camp. Site managers are often individuals who have an interest in the literary arts but don’t quite meet the qualifications to serve as a workshop instructor. Qualifications Badgerdog is committed to hiring dedicated, responsible individuals with a passion for the literary arts and a desire to help nurture the next generation of poets, playwrights, and nonfiction and fiction writers. A BA degree is appreciated but not required. Site Manager Responsibilities - Attending Badgerdog orientation training and benchmark meeting(s).
- Communicating daily with a program manager via phone and email.
- Overseeing the day-to-day operations of camp.
- Assisting in the management of elementary school, middle school, and high school classes.
- Organizing on-site reading event.
- Attending the community-wide reading and book release party.
- Submit a 1–2 page typed reflection documenting your placement at Badgerdog.
- Complete any additional duties as delineated in the Badgerdog Instructor Handbook.

Internships
- Education Programs editorial internships—Badgerdog publishes library-quality anthologies of student and senior citizen work. Our editorial intern attends production team meetings, assists in the selection and editing process, inputs corrections to submissions using Microsoft Word’s Track Changes feature, compares changes and flags editorial conflicts, corresponds with Badgerdog workshop instructors, presents galley proofs to the writers, writes press releases and/or newsletter articles, and assists with event planning.
- Badgerdog teaching internship—Our teaching interns assist in our elementary school, middle school, high school, and senior citizen creative writing workshops, as well as our summer camps. School year workshops run for 8–25 weeks, and classes meet once or twice per week. Summer camp workshops meet every day (M–F) for 3 weeks for 3 hours each day. Interns assist our workshop instructors by setting up materials for lessons, actively participating in writing exercises, providing individual feedback, and supporting classroom management. Teaching interns also assist with site readings, field trips, and community-wide readings.
- American Short Fiction internships—American Short Fiction interns receive hands-on training in copyediting, proofreading, and production scheduling; an insider's view to the story selection process; and free copies of the journal as well as other magazines and books. Intern duties include reading, evaluating, and commenting on fiction submissions; attending editorial and production meetings; assisting in planning for future issues and events; working with editors on all aspects of the short story contest; handling correspondence: logging story submissions and sending out manuscript rejections, submission guidelines, and new subscriptions; administrative work as necessary (copying, filing); pursuing archival research; searching out new talent. Interns work ten to twenty hours per week for three to four months. Internships are unpaid. College juniors or seniors, as well as college graduates and graduate students, are welcome to apply. We recommend that all applicants have some background in English literature or a related field.
- Business internships—working with the Badgerdog Management Team.
- PR and Journalism internships—working with the internal and external communications for Badgerdog.
