Education Programs

In all our programs we teach the basic reading and journaling practices that build an author’s repertoire of literary techniques. Students are led in the processes of critical reading and listening — mining the works of contemporary and classic masters, the texts of their peers, their own drafts, and even overheard conversations to find the rhetorical turns, figures of speech, and narrative structures that will become the cornerstones of their individual styles. Badgerdog’s education programs teach students the language skills necessary to become the authors of their own lives.

Through our in-school and after school educational programs, we help students in grades 3-12 to:

BadgerPups and Youth Voices In Ink

Program Description: Standards-aligned writing workshops led by Austin's best writers— award-winning poets, novelists, playwrights, and essayists. Students write poetry and prose, and learn to revise and edit their own work for publication. The program culminates in the publication of a library-quality anthology and two public readings, the second followed by a book signing with the students. A copy of the published anthology is donated to each student's school library as well as to every branch of the Austin Public Library. The YVI Anthology can also be purchased at BookPeople.

Eligible Age Group: grades 3-5 (BadgerPups), grades 6-12 (Youth Voices in Ink)

Program Duration (Total Program Hours): 16 instructional hours (BadgerPups), 30 hours (Youth Voices in Ink)

Students return to their regular classrooms as stronger readers, writers, and peer editors, and thereby help transform their schools into literary communities.

Because of high demand, applications will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis.

Description

Summer workshops are led by Austin’s best writers:  award-winning poets, novelists, playwrights, and essayists.  Students write poetry and prose, and learn to revise and edit their work for publication.  The camp culminates in the publication of a beautiful, library-quality anthology and two public readings, the second followed by a book signing with campers.  

A copy of the published anthology is donated to each student's school library as well as to every branch of the Austin Public Library. The anthologies are also sold at BookPeople.  Other camp activities include field trips to the Austin Museum of Art, the Art House at the Jones Center, and to the University of Texas's Harry Ransom Center. Classes are small (12-15 students), and students are placed within their age group. Camps are open to all Austin-area rising 3rd - 12th graders; no exceptions.

Parent Orientation will be conducted prior to the camp session, and the cost of the camp is $400, which includes three weeks of writing workshops, daily snacks, a journal, a copy of the anthology, a Badgerdog T-shirt, and two public reading events.

Eligible Age Group: rising 3rd through 12th graders are divided into age-appropriate groups.

Program Duration (Total Program Hours): 45 instructional hours, camps run three weeks.

Curriculum

Each day, students attend fun, interactive workshops in one of several genres including, but not limited to poetry, fiction, and dramatic writing. Workshops are led by Austin's best creative writers, teachers, and performers. Workshop Leaders take campers through the entire writing process, from fun exercises aimed at tapping in to the creative mind, to publication and/or performance of their work.

Snacks

A light snack is provided. If your child has special dietary restrictions or allergies, alert the Program Manager.

Transportation

Parents/Guardians are responsible for all transportation. Badgerdog cannot take responsibility for any camper transportation.

Cancellation/Refund Policy

For cancellations more than 30 days before camp begins, you'll receive a refund of $375. A refund of $275 will be given for cancellations made within thirty days of camp.
